This Master's provides deep knowledge about theory in conservation biology, including population dynamics in small populations and heterogeneous landscapes as well as conservation genetics. It provides insight into how habitat loss, habitat conversion and climate change affect biodiversity and how this feeds back on ecosystem services (e.g. pollination or biological control). There is an emphasis on developing a deep understanding of and critically evaluating conservation theory and tools in conservation, and on developing skills that can be of use both in practical conservation work and in research. Conservation biology professionals are needed and employed by governmental agencies, municipalities, non-governmental organisations and private consultancies. The programme also provides a solid ground for PhD studies.

Access to clean water is the cornerstone for enhancing people’s quality of life, increasing food supply and reducing child mortality rates. It is crucial to develop technologies that can tackle water security challenges and meet increasing demand. By applying integrated water resources management, surface water and groundwater can be used to cover this demand in a sustainable and eco-friendly way. Students learn to meet challenges like wastewater treatment, stormwater management, coastal hydraulics and hydrological processes modelling. This programme covers vital aspects of water resources engineering and graduates are sought after as hydrologists, process engineers, hydrogeologists, and water resource managers.

This Master’s programme provides knowledge on current theories and models of aquatic ecosystems, the relation between watershed, atmosphere, lakes and streams, interactions between humankind and aquatic ecosystems, and water management. Practical training in laboratory and field methodology is also emphasised. Some of the courses contain week-long excursions where practical field studies are conducted; from hypotheses and preparations, via sampling, analysing samples and data, and finally writing a report and performing an oral presentation.
