General Psychology is the major to consider if studying the area of science that explores how people and animals think, feel and act is of interest. General Psychology majors complete coursework that explores behavior, emotions, cognitive processes, and the factors that influence them from a variety of perspectives. Psychologists study behavior at both a cellular (e.g. examining the role of the brain and the nervous system) and at a more global level (e.g. examining the influences of culture). As general psychology majors, students will enhance their problem-solving, critical thinking, writing, and oral expression skills as they learn to use the tools available to behavioral scientists. Students choose to major in general psychology for many reasons. General Psychology can be students' primary area of interest within a liberal arts education that will lead to many professional opportunities that require a bachelor's degree, or it can be a pre-professional program leading to advanced study in graduate school. Popular types of graduate programs pursued by graduates of our program have been counseling, school psychology, education, clinical psychology, psychological science, social work, forensic psychology/criminal justice, industrial/organizational psychology, behavior analysis, law school and college administration.

Successful growth for any business entity involves the ability to manage assets and risks through sound financial planning. As a JMU finance major, you’ll gain a strong foundation in the principles of valuation, financial statement analysis, and the concepts behind sound financial decision-making, preparing you for a career in individual, corporate, governmental, or international markets. This broad area tends to overlap with a number of specialized fields such as investment management, asset securitization, risk management, real estate, and banking. If you are interested in investment management, you'll learn the analysis of financial investments and the economic interaction between the financial institutions and the financial markets in which they operate. If you are interested in the international aspect of finance, you'll study asset and liability management, capital budgeting, fundraising, and exchange transactions for multinational corporations.

The social work program equips graduates with the knowledge, values, and skills needed for the development of professional ethics and practice competence. The program prepares graduates to work effectively in a broad spectrum of social service settings that address poverty, multiple forms of oppression, social injustice, and other human rights violations. The department seeks to be a brave space for students with multiple and diverse identities, striving for inclusive excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The program also prepares students for graduate study in social work and other related professions including law, counseling, and public policy. In addition to lecture and class discussion, the social work program utilizes a variety of teaching strategies, including case-based and experiential approaches to enhance learning. Students are exposed to issues and organizations at local, state, and national levels through policy forums, conferences, interviews, and service learning. All majors use the interviewing labs for case simulations and interviewing to develop their practice skills. The department offers minors in family studies (with a focus in gerontology or family ecology) and Nonprofit Studies.

Effective sports and recreation managers plan, organize and direct the operations of sports and fitness programs, activities and services. Whether working with a professional sports team, at a commercial fitness business or for a parks and recreation department, you’ll need competencies in marketing, leadership and project management to be successful. As a JMU sport and recreation management major, you will develop leadership skills through sound theoretical course work, innovative learning activities and mentoring opportunities. All of your major requirements are met through small classes, team learning experiences and meaningful personal contacts with faculty and industry professionals. With an emphasis on applied practical knowledge, your required internship will augment your classroom learning as you work alongside dynamic industry professionals in premier sport and recreation organizations. Along the way, your required classes will also earn you a useful general business minor. This program will challenge you to think critically, use technology and appreciate the global community.

Health Sciences is a launching point to a wide variety of professionally rewarding careers that make a real difference to your community. The Health Sciences major is designed for students interested in understanding the causes of disease, strategies for promoting wellness and behavior change, and the scientific basis and methodologies for analysis of health concerns for both individuals and populations. The major combines a broad foundation of health-related course work that allows the graduate to work in many health-related entry-level positions. Further, with a tailored choice of preparatory courses and the addition of a Pre-Professional Health Minor the graduate is suitable for entry into professional programs in dentistry, medicine, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, public health and veterinary medicine.

Middle Grades Educators walk alongside adolescents during some of the most formative years of their life. They are eager to connect with their students and help them develop socially and emotionally in grades 6 through 8, collaborating with fellow teachers to create meaningful and integrated learning experiences for their students. Because the middle grades education field is so student-focused, our educational courses give our students a firm foundation from which to understand their students and to develop relational skills and learning strategies that will positively impact their students for years to come.

International Affairs graduates from JMU are prepared to change the world. This major provides a global perspective on the most important challenges facing the United States and the world today. Students learn to understand the world from a variety of perspectives and have the opportunity to specialize in important global problems and regions. Students develop their understanding of cultural frameworks, foreign languages, international economics and political dynamics. Our vast network of alumni helps students transition to careers in public service and many other fields. These prized abilities serve as a foundation for careers in government, consulting, policy advocacy, business, communications and the non-profit sector. We seek to enhance the quality of public policy and civic life at home and abroad by teaching students, conducting research and collaborating with people inside and outside of the JMU community.

Everything has a history. The study of History emphasizes critical, applicable skills in reading, writing and reasoning to prepare students for careers in law, business and management, research, public service, and education. Our curriculum encourages students to explore various regions and eras through course work in the history studio, digital history projects and the study of artifacts, and provides opportunities for internship experiences and study abroad. Explore the past to discover more about the world, your community and even yourself.

Earth Science is an all-embracing term for the multiple sciences related to the planet Earth. The B.A. degree in Geology with a major in Earth Science is designed to integrate all the Earth sciences in a systems approach to understanding the Earth. This includes incorporating and integrating subjects such as oceanography, meteorology and astronomy. The emphasis is on the preparation of individuals to work in a wide range of professional public sector service careers where preparation in Earth science and communication of science to non-scientific audiences is a requirement or an asset. This includes the preparation of Earth science teachers.

Upon successful completion of the study program students receive an international Graduate Diploma in Financial Management awarded by the school's headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, based on the recommendation of the faculty of the local campuses where credits were earned.
