How can we assess environmental problems? How do companies and public authorities work to prevent and solve environmental problems? How can different types of actors exert influence and control, and what policies and measures can we employ to drive positive change? If you are interested in questions like these, this programme is for you. The International Master’s Programme in Environmental Management and Policy (EMP) enables graduates to inspire and drive change by developing their abilities to evaluate, design and implement management and policy responses to complex environmental challenges. Distinguished key features are interdisciplinary learning, international nature and practically applied studies, with a dual focus on environmental policy and environmental management.

This programme enables you to gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in complex issues within the areas of environmental sciences, physical geography and climate change. You will learn methods and techniques for measurements and collecting data. You will also gather substantial experience using different tools and methods commonly used by professionals for analysis of environmental data, together with skills for presenting and communicating results and conclusions for different audiences. After successfully completing the programme, you will be an expert within a number of different fields, such as climate and water issues, nature conservation and international development, and work with issues relating to assessment, analysis, management and development of the environment and natural resources in a long-term sustainable perspective. Naturally, you could also pursue a career in research.

The Master’s programme in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science (LUMES) equips change agents with tools for solving sustainability challenges. The programme is taught in a unique interdisciplinary and internationally excellent educational and research environment at the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS). Since the programme started in 1997, LUMES has had over 900 students from roughly 100 countries. The programme focuses on sustainability challenges from a local to the global level by combining social and natural science perspectives. Emphasis is placed on understanding present societal development patterns and the environmental problems they create, and on formulating strategies for future sustainable Pathways.

MESPOM is an Erasmus+; Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management operated by four leading European and two North American universities. The students study in at least three out of six consortium universities and are awarded a joint degree upon completion. Bringing together the best from the excellent partner institutions and offering on-site insight into multiple cultures with diverse environmental regimes, MESPOM prepares students for identifying and implementing solutions to complex environmental sustainability challenges, especially in an international context. Drawing on fields such as anthropology, geography, sociology and economic history, the programme provides interdisciplinary perspectives and analytical tools for communicating about problems of sustainability. It represents an important complement to technological and natural science approaches by focusing on the cultural dimensions of consumption and resource use and social science perspectives on the global distribution of environmental problems. This programme is unique in combining perspectives on sustainability from the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. It brings together lecturers and students from various backgrounds in discussions about human-environmental relations.

Increasing disasters and related losses are a truly global challenge. Governments and international organisations acknowledge the necessity to increase efforts in risk management and climate change adaptation to adjust to changing environments and develop safe and sustainable societies. The programme offers a mix of practical and theoretical learning with a strong focus on group work, the interaction between students and teaching staff, as well as important actors within this field of study. It contributes to meeting the need for qualified professionals who have a broad understanding of the field and ability to apply skills and generic tools in risk assessment, capacity assessment, preparedness and contingency planning, and risk-based land use planning.

Human Geography covers a wide range of topics from environmental and landscape changes to planetary urbanisation and economic crises. The scope of the subject is such that it will give you an excellent scientific base that can easily be combined with other academic subjects. The programme aims to provide you with understanding of the spatial dimensions of social, economic, cultural and environmental processes and their importance for welfare and living conditions in various geographical contexts. Studies in human geography prepare you for a career in physical planning, environmental issues, urban development, landscape changes or economic development.
